Bay Area Spotlight: 11thAnnual Iranian Film Festival
In the Bay Area, there is always something going on during the week or weekend. Whether it be a cultural event or something fun to do with the kids, each week is filled with activities that everyone will enjoy.
As an Iranian, this week’s Bay Area Spotlight is close to my heart and I’m excited to share that the 11th Annual Iranian Film Festival (IFF) will be taking place this September 22-23. The Iranian Film Festival is a spectacular display of film and Iranian filmmakers. It’s the first independent Iranian film festival outside of Iran, showcasing films made by or about Iranians from around the world. Launched in 2008, the IFF is also a platform for these filmmakers to express their creativity, talent, and culture to the community of the Bay Area and beyond.
The festival presents 48 films ranging from short, children, fiction, documentary, and animation. Shirin Neshat, an international artist with works in photography and filmmaking, was born in Qazvin, Iran. After coming to the U.S., she studied painting at the University of California at Berkley, where she earned an MFA. After a long hiatus from art, she emerged as a filmmaker and in 1996, producing independent films shown around the world. On Saturday, September 22, San Francisco will present her latest film, Looking for Oum Kulthum.
This year, the festival will be held at the San Francisco Art Institute. Tickets are available online or at the venue with general admission starting at $12, students $11, festival pass for all screenings $120, and day passes at $60.
